The provincial government says it is contributing $127 million for a new York University campus in Markham — the first university campus in York Region.

Michael Chan, MPP for Markham–Unionville, was joined by Steven Del Duca, MPP for Vaughan, and Helena Jaczek, MPP for Oak Ridges–Markham to make the announcement on June 9 at the Markham PanAm Centre.

The new university campus will serve an estimated 4,000 students in York Region, with the potential for more students over time.

The project was originally announced in 2015. Then, the City of Markham said it would donate the land, while York University has committed $45 million for its construction. The Regional Municipality of York  has also committed up to $25 million towards the initiative.
