The OEA transcends its traditional role as a unionized contractor employer bargain- ing authority by working co-operatively with Ontario-based Ironworkers Union lo- cals on apprenticeship training and co-op- eratively marketing unionized contractor advantages. (The union's full name is the International Association of Bridge, Struc- tural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron- workers, but the union generally addresses itself as the Ironworkers Union.) OEA chair Sherman Ladner says the as- sociation has been promoting acceptance of Ironworkers as skilled professionals, while encouraging their training and leadership development. “We’ve also been working at branding the Ironworkers Union,” he said. “Unions Management Progressive Action Co-oper- ative Trust, which works on an international level to “address mutual concerns and en- courage reasonable balanced solutions.” The OEA participates in boards and or- ganizations relating to health and safety, the Ontario College of Trades, pension inter- ests, trade improvement efforts, and re- gional advisory groups.
