DataBid client profile: ALTRA Construction Rentals Inc. delivers aerial and general equipment to keep projects running

ALTRA Construction Rentals Inc. started humbly in 2009 out of a Flamborough home office with only three pieces of equipment. The company began by renting locally to contractors in the Hamilton-Halton area.

Since then, ALTRA has grown exponentially. ALTRA now operates from a Grimbsy home office with an inventory of 650 pieces of aerial and general rental equipment and is also now an official JLG Industries Inc. authorized dealer.

President Adam Komarniski says the company has been founded on and grown with the philosophy of supplying its customers with great equipment and service to get the job done and ensuring customers “get what they need.”

“We carry everything from Bobcat brand equipment to JLG high-reach lifts and everything in between,” he said. “We work to ensure we are a one-stop shop and if we don’t have what you need, we’ll find it.”

ALTRA also operates a fleet of specialty 46TKRJ and 66TK booms. Komarniski says these Skyjack booms articulate down and under to serve unique needs. He says there is only a handful available in Canada and with 12 in its fleet, ALTRA is a prime source.

“We also have an in-house electronics division run by a service manage with 25 years in the business,” he said. “We can rebuild and repair boom and scissor electronics and carry drive controllers and joysticks in our parts department. Combine that with a solid crew of service technicians and we can ensure projects keep running even if equipment breaks down.”

He says ALTRA carries a good mix of new and used equipment so there are always options available to prevent downtime on jobs.

Komarniski says after many years in the industry he has the contacts to source additional equipment to meet his clients’ needs. Strong relationships are essential to ALTRA’s success and he says there is little the company can’t do to help a customer fill their equipment requirements, whatever they might be.

“Our inventory and access to equipment allows us to compete with the bigger names. Competitive pricing is important and we have the service to follow. The company fleet has a Piper Twin Comanche plane acting as the long distance service provider. This allows ALTRA to meet with and assist clients wherever they are more readily, even over long distances.”

Komarniski has an AZ licence and has personally delivered equipment to clients in urgent circumstances.

“The biggest challenge for a business like ours is building a brand with a strong reputation of delivering on time and what is needed. We want the industry to know we can be a first call rental company from a project’s starting foundation pour right through to the end of the job.

ALTRA has worked from Windsor to northern Quebec serving small, medium and large companies including a mix of commercial, restoration and residential clients. Buoyed by a strong staff with solid knowledge, Komarniski says the company is looking to expand into Toronto through a second location to better serve the GTA.

Komarniski says he applies DataBid’s services to make his business more efficient. He uses the service to learn who is bidding and has been awarded contracts and how projects are progressing.
