OHMPA recognizes outstanding service with awards

    The Ontario Hot Mix Producers Association (OHMPA) handed out its Honorary Life Member, Earl Kee Volunteer of the Year, King Beamish Excellence and Joe Bunting Mentorship Awards at its 40th annual general meeting and awards luncheon at the Westin Trillium Blue Mountain Resort in Collingwood on March 27th.

    “Through our awards program, we seek to celebrate individuals who make a positive difference in the asphalt industry, one road at a time,” said OHMPA executive director Doug Duke. “The four individuals we’ve recognized this year have not only made a positive impact in the industry, but also have been a valuable asset to the association and its members through their contributions.”

    In recognition of his dedication to asphalt research, which has led to significant industry breakthroughs, Laverne Miller, senior advisor for Bitumar, was inducted as an Honorary Life Member of OHMPA. Mr. Miller is the holder of several patents, including one on the method to produce superior quality paving asphalt.

    Award-Winners

    Two-time OHMPA president (2006 and 2012) and general manager of the Murray Group Limited, Murray Ritchie was awarded the King Beamish Excellence Award for his numerous contributions to the association and his leadership which has served as a motivation and inspiration to association members.

    Mike Deckert, vice-president of FLO Components, was named the 2013 Earl Key Volunteer of the Year. As chair of OHMPA’s Plant & Paving committee, Mr. Deckert has been instrumental in the development of the Roads Scholar Program, a partnership with local colleges intended better engage students interested in the asphalt industry, which began in 2013. Under his leadership, the Plant and Paving Committee have also brought in Ministry of Labour representation to OHMPA’s annual Spring Operations seminar.

    Fowler Construction foreman and superintendent, Roger Brassard was awarded the 2013 Joe Bunting Mentorship Award for his good advice freely given to peers and for the positive impact he has made on the careers of many young people in the industry. The Joe Bunting Mentorship Award recognizes the importance of mentorship to the community.

    “OHMPA owes each of these gentlemen a tremendous debt of gratitude,” said Mr. Duke. “We hope these awards will in some small way express the thanks of a grateful association and a grateful industry.”
