Construction is about to get underway on McMaster University\u2019s 10 Bay\u00a0Graduate\u00a0Residence\u00a0on\u00a0the southwest\u00a0corner of King Street West and Bay Street South\u00a0in downtown Hamilton.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur first\u00a0graduate residence is the latest development in McMaster\u2019s growing presence in downtown Hamilton,\u201d says David Farrar, president of McMaster\u00a0University. \u201cThe graduate students\u00a0who will reside at 10 Bay\u00a0will bring more energy, life and creativity to the centre of the city.\u201d<\/p>\n

Architectural design is inspired by graduate students who will live there. More than\u00a0600\u00a0graduate students and their family members will\u00a0move into the residence\u00a0in fall 2023, contributing\u00a0to the revitalization of the\u00a0downtown community.<\/p>\n

The facility is being\u00a0constructed and financed through a public-private partnership including the University and\u00a0Knightstone\u00a0Capital, a company that specializes in developing academic residences.<\/p>\n

When\u00a0surveyed,\u00a0graduate students at McMaster said they preferred a central downtown Hamilton location, close to the Hamilton Farmer\u2019s market, grocery store,\u00a0and\u00a0many\u00a0caf\u00e9s, restaurants and shops.\u00a0Local government and business leaders\u00a0agree that adding hundreds of graduate students to the city\u2019s core will\u00a0have a\u00a0positive\u00a0impact on\u00a0businesses\u00a0and the neighbourhood\u00a0overall.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re looking forward to the energy, excitement and innovation on the horizon as construction for the downtown graduate residence begins. Those living at 10 Bay Street will be steps away from local restaurants, shops and trails and will truly get a sense of what Hamilton is all about. We\u2019re excited for our community to grow and look forward to welcoming these graduate students to our city,\u201d said Mayor Fred Eisenberger.<\/p>\n

To promote health and wellness, the 30-story residence\u00a0will feature\u00a0a fitness centre, yoga\u00a0and\u00a0musical instrument jamming spaces, green roofs\u00a0with an\u00a0outdoor running track, BBQ\u00a0area\u00a0and\u00a0lounge\u00a0spaces, beautiful event spaces with communal kitchens and study or meeting spaces.\u00a0Graduate students will have a choice of studio, one,\u00a0and two-bedroom apartments.\u00a0The building, designed by Diamond Schmitt, features\u00a0space for 200 bicycles and\u00a0will\u00a0follow\u00a0McMaster\u2019s Sustainability Policy,\u00a0aiming to\u00a0receive\u00a0a\u00a0minimum of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED\u00ae) Silver\u00a0Certification.\u00a0The\u00a0residence\u00a0will be\u00a0operated by McMaster\u2019s Housing & Conference Services.<\/p>\n

\u201cMcMaster University\u2019s\u00a010 Bay\u00a0Graduate\u00a0Residence\u00a0is the first residence McMaster is designing specifically for graduate students. This residence will fill a significant gap by attracting even more of the brightest minds to McMaster from around the globe and it will also help\u00a0continue the revitalization\u00a0of\u00a0downtown\u00a0Hamilton,\u201d says Roger\u00a0Couldrey, vice-president Administration.<\/p>\n

In 2015, McMaster opened the David Braley Health Sciences Centre at 100 Main Street West, directly across from Hamilton City Hall.\u00a0In 2016, One James North opened\u00a0in the Jackson Square development,\u00a0housing the\u00a0university\u2019s Centre for Continuing Education, as well as\u00a0finance and advancement staff.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
