Ten wood projects and two industry professionals were presented with <\/span>Ontario Wood WORKS! Design Awards<\/b><\/a> for design excellence and innovation in using wood for design and construction during the 17th annual recognition night held in Toronto, Nov. 1. <\/span><\/p>\n

The following wood projects were given awards for excelling in different categories: the Ontario Wood Award to <\/span>Story Pod<\/b>, New Market by <\/span>Atelier Kastelic Buffey Inc.<\/b>; Environmental Building Award to <\/span>Active House<\/b>, Centennial Park by <\/span>Great Gulf<\/b>, <\/span>superkul<\/b> and <\/span>Quaile Engineering<\/b>; Interior Wood Design Award to <\/span>Lizardis Hall<\/b>, Wilfrid Laurier University by <\/span>Diamond Schmitt Architects<\/b>, <\/span>David Thompson Architect Ltd.<\/b> and <\/span>VanBoxmeer & Stranges Engineering Ltd.<\/b>; Residential Wood Design Award to <\/span>House on Ancaster Creek<\/b>, Ancaster by <\/span>Williamson Williamson Inc.<\/b> and <\/span>Blackwell, Faet Lab<\/b>; Mid-Rise Wood Design Award to <\/span>Lake House Condominiums<\/b>, Grimsby by <\/span>Branthaven Homes<\/b>, <\/span>Kirkor Architects + Planners <\/b>and <\/span>Tacoma Engineers Inc.<\/b>, Institutional Wood Design Award less than $10M to <\/span>St. David Catholic Elementary School<\/b>, Sudbury by <\/span>Yallowega Belanger Salach Architecture <\/b>and <\/span>A25 Associates Limited<\/b>; Institutional Wood Design Award more than $10M to <\/span>McEwen School of Architecture<\/b>, Sudbury by LGA Architectural Partners and AECOM; Commercial Wood Design Award to <\/span>Ontario Wood Pavilion <\/b>by <\/span>blackLAB architects inc. <\/b>and <\/span>Moses Structural Engineers<\/b>; Northern Ontario Excellence Award to <\/span>Carpenters\u2019 Union Local 1669 Training Centre<\/b>, Thunder Bay by <\/span>FORM Architecture Engineering<\/b>; and Jury\u2019s Choice Award to the <\/span>National Arts Centre Rejuvenation<\/b>, Ottawa by <\/span>Diamond Schmitt Architects <\/b>and <\/span>Fast+Epp<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cProject teams are using these high-performance building materials in exciting ways, actively and imaginatively exploring wood\u2019s expanding potential. The awards program gives us an opportunity to showcase what is happening in wood design and construction,\u201d said Ontario Wood WORKS! Executive director <\/span>Marianne Berube<\/b><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, industry professionals recognized by Ontario Wood Works! include: <\/span>Pratt Homes <\/b>with the Designer\/Builder of the Year Award, and industry leader <\/span>Tad Putyra<\/b> with the Wood Champion Award. Putyra is currently the president and COO of <\/span>Great Gulf Homes <\/b>low-rise division and president of <\/span>H+ME Technology<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Wood WORKS! program advocates and supports the use of wood in all types of construction. Initiated by the <\/span>Canadian Wood Council<\/b><\/a>, the program also connects practitioners to resources related to wood construction, assists in sourcing products, and conducts seminars.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
