GUELPH – Apple Self Storage’s Guelph facility has become the first self storage building in Ontario to achieve Zero Carbon Building-Design certification from the Canada Green Building Council, the company announced Friday.
“We’re proud that our Guelph facility sets a new standard for what self storage can be,” said David Allan, president of Apple Self Storage. “Zero Carbon Building-Design certification reflects a deliberate choice to invest in an all-electric, solar-powered building that lowers emissions without compromising the secure, climate-controlled, high-quality experience our customers rely on.”
The project involved Canadian design and construction firms including Cspace Architecture Inc., Rick Brown and Associates Inc., Fieldgate Construction Management Ltd., Malleum Development Corporation, and Frost Building Systems Inc.
The three-storey building at 110 Stevenson St. S., which opened in February 2025, was designed to reduce carbon emissions while offering secure, climate-controlled storage. The building runs entirely on electricity and features a 185-kilowatt rooftop solar installation, which offsets its operational carbon footprint and can feed surplus power back to the grid.
Energy use will be cut by 25.2 per cent compared with the 2020 National Energy Code for Buildings and keep embodied carbon at 197.2 kilograms of CO₂ equivalent per square metre, well below the zero carbon threshold of 350 kg CO₂e/m². The building also uses non-combustion heating and Kingspan K-Roc HF insulated metal panels to improve energy efficiency.
Beyond its environmental performance, the Guelph facility offers modern features such as indoor loading bays, climate-controlled units, and enhanced security systems. Apple Self Storage said it plans to continue incorporating sustainable technologies across its growing Canadian portfolio.
