The University of Toronto has unveiled the design for its new Temerty Building, a major academic and research hub aimed at advancing leadership in science, medicine and biomedical innovation.

The nine-storey, 388,000-square-foot facility will be located at the heart of the university’s St. George campus on King’s College Circle, replacing the west wing of the Medical Sciences Building. The project is envisioned as a central gathering space for research, education and major university events, including convocation receptions and alumni reunions.

Designed by MVRDV in partnership with Diamond Schmitt Architects, the building will feature light-filled common areas intended to foster collaboration and cross-disciplinary exchange among researchers, students and clinicians.

“The Temerty Building will be an iconic new landmark where people, ideas and disciplines can converge in the service of human health, science and learning,” said U of T president Melanie Woodin.

The facility will bring together the Temerty Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Arts & Science, supporting collaboration across health-care disciplines and scientific fields, stemming from a strategy outlined in the faculty’s 2018–2023 academic plan, which identified the need for updated infrastructure to support research, education and innovation.

A significant portion of construction funding comes from a $250-million donation made in 2020 by philanthropists James Temerty and Louise Temerty. The family committed additional funding in fall 2025, reinforcing support for the project.

“The Temerty Building will be a place where brilliant minds from across disciplines come together to solve the toughest health challenges of our time,” James Temerty said.

Once complete, the building is expected to serve generations of students, researchers and health professionals, while strengthening Canada’s role in global health research and education.
