When Blerta Jakupi joined Peter & Greg Walker Contracting in 2013, she wasn’t just looking for a job — she was searching for a company where she could build a meaningful career. “I wanted to work somewhere that valued quality, hard work, and community,” she recalls. “Peter and Greg Walker Contracting stood out because of their reputation for integrity and excellence. I knew that by joining their team, I would gain hands-on experience and skills that would last a lifetime.”

Over the next decade, Jakupi did exactly that. Starting at the ground level, she learned both the technical and business sides of contracting, gaining a deep understanding of how projects are managed from start to finish. She took on increasing responsibilities, moved into leadership roles, and developed strong relationships with clients and partners along the way.

By 2022, she had reached a career milestone many aspire to but few achieve — she became the owner of the company. “After many dedicated years of service, I was fortunate to take the next step and become the owner,” Jakupi says. “It has been one of the greatest accomplishments of my career. Owning the business allows me to carry forward the values that shaped me, while leading the company with vision, consistency, and a commitment to excellence.”

Her approach to leadership is guided by a simple but powerful philosophy: integrity, communication, and respect. “Integrity means doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. Communication ensures everyone is on the same page, which builds trust. And respect — for staff, clients, and partners — creates strong, lasting relationships,” she explains. “I also believe in leading by example. If I ask my team to do something, I am willing to do it myself.”

Jakupi is especially proud of creating an environment where employees can grow and thrive. “The most rewarding part of leading this company is seeing the impact our work has on people’s lives,” she says. “Whether it’s building, improving, or restoring a space, we get to see our clients’ visions come to life. But equally important is creating opportunities for my team — watching them grow, succeed, and take pride in their work is deeply fulfilling.”

Teamwork is central to Jakupi’s philosophy, and she points to moments when her staff went above and beyond as a highlight of her career. “I remember one project where the deadline was tight, and the challenges kept piling up,” she says. “Seeing the team pull together, support each other, and deliver exceptional results reminded me why I’m proud to lead this company. It’s not just about completing the job; it’s about how we rise to challenges together.”

Her journey has also required navigating obstacles as a woman in a traditionally male-dominated industry. “There were times when my abilities were underestimated simply because I am a woman,” Jakupi admits. “I faced those moments by staying committed, knowledgeable, and consistent — letting my work speak for itself. Respect is earned, not given, and I’ve been fortunate to earn it from both peers and clients.”

Jakupi encourages other women considering careers in construction or business ownership to persevere and believe in themselves. “Don’t let barriers hold you back,” she says. “There will always be challenges, but with hard work, determination, and a willingness to keep learning, you can carve out your place in this industry. Seek mentors, build a support network, and don’t be afraid to step into leadership roles.”

She also sees the construction industry evolving, with more women taking on leadership and trade roles. “We’re already seeing positive change,” she says. “Women bring fresh perspectives, problem-solving skills, and collaborative approaches that strengthen the industry. I believe the future of construction will be shaped by inclusivity as much as expertise.”

Looking forward, Jakupi envisions a future of growth and innovation for Peter & Greg Walker Contracting. “My goal is to continue building on the company’s strong foundation while embracing opportunities for expansion,” she says. “I want the company to remain a trusted name in the community — known for quality, professionalism, and leadership. Investing in our people and preparing the next generation to carry the business forward is at the heart of everything we do.”

Reflecting on her journey, Jakupi expresses gratitude for the opportunities and experiences that have shaped her career. “I’m deeply thankful for over a decade of working with Peter & Greg Walker Contracting and for the privilege of now owning a business built on professionalism, trust, and teamwork,” she says. “Every project, every challenge, and every success has been a lesson — and I’m committed to carrying these values forward as we grow.”
