Hamilton LRT advances as Ontario awards first major construction contract

Hamilton Transit Alliance, led by Aecon Infrastructure with Hatch, Egis and Systra as designers, has been selected through a competitive procurement process to deliver the first major work on the Hamilton LRT. This contract includes preparatory work along the LRT route, utility relocations, grade separations, road reconstruction and upgraded sidewalks and traffic control systems.

Once complete, this new transit line will extend 14 kilometres with stops at McMaster University, Hamilton Stadium, Eastgate Square, Ottawa Street, Gage Park, downtown Hamilton and other key destinations.

Shovels are already in the ground on the project with early works and utility relocation projects.

Once complete, the project will have delivered other key civil and utility infrastructure improvements to the City of Hamilton, including:

  • 14 kms of sewer replacement and separation
  • 16 kms of watermain replacement
  • 14 kms of road reconstruction
  • 28 kms of replaced and upgraded sidewalks
  • 62 upgraded and replaced traffic signals

With the award of this contract, the project now enters an alliance development phase to progress designs, costs, and construction schedule. The development phase will last 18-24 months.

By partnering directly with private sector companies to form an “Alliance,” rather than administering a third-party consortium this allows for greater flexibility and collaboration among project participants and ensures that everyone involved is working on a “best-for-project” basis.

There will be a second procurement which will include stops, rail, and systems.
