Ottawa based Advanced Consulting and Training Ltd. (ACT) has been a full service provider of customized workplace health and safety training programs since CEO and president Andrew Latendre founded the business in 1998.

ACT validates its services by achieving TSSA accreditations, being a Ministry of Labour recognized training provider, offering WSIB recognized training and holding an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, says operations director Brian Smith. “Latendre and ACT take great pride in being a qualified single source health and safety training provider for clients.”

Smith says the company has evolved its programs and services over time in response to clients’ changing needs. “That responsiveness and ability to customize and adapt is one of our greatest strengths.”

“We can offer a variety of operational programs including material handling certification, company specific policy and procedure manuals, developing standard operating procedures, third party site audits and certifying joint health and safety committees.”

He says the company’s administrative programs include executive due diligence, competent site supervisor training, basics of supervising, problem solving, conflict resolution, collaborative team building and dealing with difficult people and challenging situations better.

“We believe soft-skills training are essential in order to face the challenges of managing occupational health and safety and leading a diverse twenty-first century workforce.”

ACT has partnered with core clients in every sector of the economy including SMS Rents; PCL Constructors Canada Inc.; Benson Group of Companies; the Ottawa Catholic School Board; and LiUNA Local 527, among others. In each case Smith says ACT can customize its initiatives to suit the client’s budget and health and safety needs.

Offering more than 100 safety training and consulting programs through a team of experienced health and safety consultants and trainers, Smith says ACT can offer training either at the client’s location or at its state of the art training and education centre.

He says clients in Eastern Ontario from Belleville to the Quebec border take advantage of the training centre’s confined space entry simulator, operate material handling equipment indoors, use its fall protection equipment and have an opportunity to engage in mock lock-out and tag-out systems. “All of the training is provided in comfortable surroundings that can accommodate large groups of 50 or more.”

Though Ontario is the company’s main geographic area, ACT also works with corporate clients who may operate coast to coast. Smith says the company has become adept at creating policy manuals and providing site specific training that can be delivered in both official languages to meet the various provincial occupational health and safety acts and regulations. This, he says, allows a company to have assurance that its staff is qualified to work wherever they may be asked to travel.
