A joint venture between two European construction companies has been awarded a $4.32-billion contract to build a key section of Toronto’s planned Ontario Line.
Italy’s Webuild Group and FCC Canada Ltd., a subsidiary of Spain’s FCC Construcción, will build the Pape Tunnel and Underground Stations project, which includes about three kilometres of twin tunnels and two underground stations.
The stations, Pape and Cosburn, will connect the Ontario Line to the existing Line 2 subway. The work will also include underpinning the existing TTC Pape station.
Webuild said the companies have entered the execution stage of the project, with construction work set to begin.
The Ontario Line is planned as a 15.6-kilometre rapid transit line running from the Ontario Science Centre area to Ontario Place, with 15 stations and connections to more than 40 transit routes and services.
The Pape Tunnel and Underground Stations project is one of several major contracts being delivered as part of the Ontario Line.
According to Metrolinx CEO Michael Lindsay, the line is expected to open in the early 2030s.
Webuild is also part of the Connect 6ix consortium, which was awarded a roughly $9-billion contract in 2022 to provide the line’s rolling stock, systems, operations and maintenance.
That contract includes supplying trains and technology systems for the Ontario Line.
The Pape Tunnel and Underground Stations contract is one of the largest components of the provincial government’s plan to build the new subway line and expand Toronto’s rapid transit network.
