Osgoode Professional Development (OsgoodePD) has announced the dates for its upcoming “Ontario Construction Liens – The Essentials 2026” course, aimed at providing construction professionals and legal practitioners with the core knowledge to navigate the province’s technical lien process.
The one-day program will be offered in a blended format, available both in-person and online, on Oct. 21, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET. A scheduled online replay, which includes the ability to submit questions, will also be available on Dec. 15.
According to the program outline provided by OsgoodePD, the course is designed for lawyers in private practice or in-house, as well as professionals across the construction, finance and real estate sectors.
Participants will learn the essential framework and mechanics of the lien process. Key topics include when lien rights arise and expire, how to preserve, perfect and enforce a lien, and how the holdback system and annual release of holdbacks function.
The curriculum also covers:
- Lien actions and mortgage priorities (who gets paid first)
- Common lien mistakes, repairs and LAWPRO insights
- Motions, production and discovery issues unique to lien proceedings
- Lien trials and arbitration preparation
- Breach of trust and companion remedies
Attendees will engage with leading construction law practitioners and litigators to receive real-world examples and procedural tips to apply to future lien matters.
In addition to the main session, registrants will receive access to three self-paced online classes starting Oct. 7. These preliminary modules will cover the fundamentals of Ontario construction liens, key changes to complex liens under the province’s Construction Act, and risks associated with breach of trust remedies.
