“PCL’s participation in this event is a great way to meet, network, and share our co-op and new graduate career opportunities and further our commitment to the engineering profession,” says HR programs specialist Nadia Camphor. “We see GNCTR as an avenue for us to contribute to the career development of future engineers and potential PCL employees.”
This year hosted by the University of Waterloo, GNCTR is the largest student-run engineering competition in Canada, bringing together over 450 engineering students from universities and technical institutions to design, construct, and race a toboggan with concrete running surfaces.
In addition to acting as the event’s title sponsor, several of PCL’s Canadian offices sponsored individual teams from the University of Waterloo, University of Ottawa, University of Manitoba, University of Calgary and the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT).
As part of its involvement, PCL participated in the technical and safety exhibits and the career fair, and provided two technical judges and two safety judges. This year, PCL introduced and presented the inaugural safety award at the competition’s closing ceremonies.
“The tremendous level of effort and dedication students put into GNCTR is why PCL is so proud to be the title sponsor,” says Cody Nowell, a construction engineer with PCL Winnipeg who acted as one of the competition’s safety judges. “Through this competition, students have a first-hand opportunity to challenge themselves, while working as part of a team to problem solve and build a project that is innovative, meets prescriptive guidelines, and is safe.”
PCL fills more than 400 student placements across Canada annually. To learn more about the student program at PCL: https://careers.pcl.com/students/ca/en.
