The Village of Erin Meadows Phase II care and apartment complex nearing completing in Mississauga represents innovations and economic practicality in design, construction and application.

Magil Construction is building the 12-storey, 277-unit project with common areas, for owner RBJ Schlegel Holdings Inc. The company owns several retirement communities and care facilities in western and southern Ontario.

The new tower will be connected to the original Phase I Long Term Care Facility at the corner of Winston Churchill and Erin Centre Boulevards, that opened about 15 years ago.

While there were some delays in the project, participants say the end-result will meet the community’s needs for a full-range retirement facility.

The contractor says it is building the 350,000 sq. ft. structure designed by Cornerstone Architecture to Green Globes system environmental standards under a construction management contractor.

Other key consultants include Carson Woods Architects (site planning) Stantec (civil engineering), Gary and Fick Ltd. (structural) and Ron Koudys Landscape Architects.

The new structure features independent living apartments, with in-suite full kitchens and laundry equipment, yet full with access to 24-hour emergency nursing response and the community’s overall recreational and entertainment events.

The overall complex includes a range of services, including full service retirement suites and apartments, assisted care, memory care and long-term care.

“The Schlegel Villages mission is to create villages for older adults where everyone can thrive as human beings and pursue their passions, develop new friendships, learn and grow, contribute to their community and have fun together,” James Schlegel, the company’s president and CEO, says in a statement. “This has been the work of the Schlegel family for three generations since my grandparents Wilfred and Emma Schlegel opened a small nursing home in London, ON, in 1953.”

“I am so proud of the Village of Erin Meadows team members who over the past 15 years have created a long term care home that provides outstanding care to seniors and, even more importantly, has established a reputation for being a vibrant, active and enriching community where everyone can find meaning and purpose in their lives,” Schlegel said. “It is this reputational foundation that we build on today to expand the Village of Erin Meadows.

Supplier Kitchener Glass says it provided all the interior and exterior glazing systems, as set out in the project’s specifications, using the Kawneer product line.

“Our team has worked well with the Magil team both on site and during the design process for our scope of work,” said finance director Nancy Bauman. “We were pleased to be successful in the bidding process for this project and to be given the opportunity to bring to the table our 43 years of experience in the industry, as well as our expertise to deliver the high quality standards that a project of this type demands. Our in-house skilled trades/labor force and highly experienced office staff, were integral in making this all possible.”

Kitchener Glass’s chief estimator is Matt Karnowski, who is available to quote for future projects.
