The Ontario Asphalt Pavement Council (OAPC) has elected Mike McLean, senior marketing and sales for McAsphalt Industries Limited, as its chairman.

McLean is taking the over helm of the council from Donn Bernal, general manager of Yellowline Asphalt Products Ltd., who served as Ontario Hot Mix Producers Association (OHMPA) president for 2016 and OAPC chairman for part of 2017. This year, OHMPA officially amalgamated with the Ontario Road Builders’ Association and is a council of ORBA.

“It is an honour and privilege to have been elected as the OAPC’s chairman as we enter this new chapter in our history and are a council of ORBA,” McLean said in a statement. “Now that we have come together as a unified voice with ORBA, we are in a better position to be proactive and move forward as we address industry challenges. Our number one priority is to provide performing asphalt pavements, which is a collective effort. We need to let the road owners and the public know that we want to do the job right the first time just as much as they do. We too strive for and desire quality and performance in our asphalt pavements.”

McLean is a resident of Whitby and he grew up in Kirkland Lake, Ontario. He is a graduate of Canadore College with a three-year degree in Small Business Administration. He got his start in the asphalt industry early in life through his family’s asphalt paving business in Kirkland Lake, McLean Paving KL Ltd. In 2002, he joined McAsphalt Industries Limited in sales and marketing. He credits the Carricks of McAsphalt, Carl MacTaggart, the late Keith Davidson and Peter Perrone as tremendous mentors of his within the industry.

In 2009, McLean first joined the OHMPA Board of Directors as John Carrick was stepping off of the board. “Joining the Board of Directors was one of the best decisions I ever made,” he said. “Subsequently, I joined the membership committee and the marketing committee and learned from the great leaders before me and became a chair of both committees. This experience has been invaluable.”

It is an honour and pleasure to pass the chairman’s gavel of the council to Mike,” said Bernal. “He has a significant depth of knowledge and passion for the industry and I am very confident that he will continue to lead the charge of all our initiatives for the continued pursuit of excellence in asphalt pavements.”
