In response to Canada’s growing housing demands and the pressing shortage of skilled construction professionals, York University’s School of Continuing Studies has unveiled a post-graduate certificate in digital construction management.
The full-time program, launching in September 2025, aims to shape the future of construction by blending traditional project management with cutting-edge digital technologies.
“Canada and Ontario’s population continue to grow at a significant rate, increasing the demand for housing, social infrastructure, and transit,” said Marlon Bray, Executive Vice President of Clark Construction Management and a member of the program’s advisory committee. “We need talented construction management professionals equipped with the latest technological skills to meet this demand.”
Designed for recent graduates and industry professionals, the program focuses on leveraging software, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and 3D modeling to improve productivity, sustainability, and cost-efficiency in Industrial, Commercial, Institutional (ICI), and High-rise Residential Construction.
The new program addresses this need head-on by preparing students for roles such as construction managers, project co-ordinators, and estimators.
“When we consulted with industry leaders, it was clear that expertise in emerging technologies is no longer optional — it’s essential,” said Christine Brooks-Cappadocia, assistant vice-president of continuing studies. “Our hands-on, project-based learning model ensures graduates can make an immediate impact, saving employers months of costly training.”
The curriculum covers:
- Construction Methods and Blueprints: Mastering cost estimation, materials management, and blueprint analysis.
- 3D Modeling & Building Information Modeling (BIM): Integrating advanced digital tools to revolutionize design and planning.
- AI-Powered Workflow Automation: Boosting efficiency and minimizing project delays.
- Cost Estimation & Scheduling Software: Streamlining construction timelines and budgets.
A standout feature is the construction practicum, where students can specialize in construction estimation, project coordination, or contract administration, working on real-world projects under the mentorship of industry experts.
As the construction sector undergoes rapid digital transformation, the demand for tech-savvy professionals continues to rise. This program is tailored for graduates from civil engineering, architecture, computer science, and environmental studies, as well as professionals seeking to upskill in construction management.
