Sudbury’s Health Sciences North (HSN) is building a new learning facility, where future doctors, nurses, technicians, and paramedics will be able to train on medically advanced equipment.

Ground broke in June 2018 for the 28,000 sq. ft. structure, which will house more than 2,000 learners from 70 post-secondary institutions each year.

The equipment at the Learners’ Centre will include the Simulation Lab which is now temporarily housed at the Sudbury Outpatient Centre. The Simulation Lab is designed to replicate medical settings such as an Emergency or Operating Room. It provides training for procedures such as intubation, suturing, and medical scoping.

The centre is to be known as the Labelle Innovation and Learning Centre, and is named after $5 millon benefactors Marcel and Frances Labelle from Cochrane, Ontario. Other funds going toward the $26.3 million price tag have come from a one-time capital grant of up to $21,626,100 from the province.

There will be immediate benefits to patients at HSN, as students at the Learners’ Centre will also help provide care to people at HSN, a facility that experiences overcrowding and lack of beds, while they learn.

The architect for Labelle Learners’ Centre is Yallowega Belanger Salach (YBSA).

YBSA also completed a revamp and expansion on HSN in 2010.
